Fiberglass foam and epoxy

Image
It's been a while since I updated. I thought my health was improving but I was wrong. Hoping for more surgery this year. Anyway... I have got some compset infusion resin.Obviously dearer than vinylester but I split a pack with someone and the price was pretty good. I have I think about 200 kg ready to go. And it's nice and thin. Someone on a forum found a chinese foam called stucell. I found the manufacturer and placed an order for one each of many things they sell. Below is a breakdown of landed prices in Australia and photos of most of what I got. I have not yet unwrapped the glass. The 400 gsm and 600 gsm rolls are 60 kg each so a bit unwieldy. Prices: 400 gsm 45/45 stiched 60 kg $330AU 600 gsm  45/45 stiched 60 kg $299AU 200 gsm woven 30kg $173AU It cost $1209AU to make this stuff and ship it from China to Brisbane. It cost $970 to get it from the ship to my car. Unbelievable. I hope to contain those costs next time. Prices are AU$ landed plus customs unloading et

A second hand mast and boom

So after some dramas with my trailer I finally got across to look at the mast and boom. They are not perfect but they are sound enough and pretty much exactly the right size for the boat. $1000. The download plans cost me $600 and printing them out looks like it will be about another $50. All costs are in Australian dollars. Now I need to focus on our trip to Tasmania next month. Hopefully I can get ready for that in time, then in March I can get on to building the hulls.

The beginning

I have decided to build a boat. If you don't think that's mad enough I've chosen a pretty complex design and a difficult build method. I am going to build a hybrid of two of Mr Richard Woods catamaran designes. They use the same 25' hulls but one is a folding cat with central cuddy cabin called Sango, the other is an open deck racer called Wizzer. Links to the design pages: http://sailingcatamarans.com/index.php/designs-2/2-catamarans-under-25ft/159-wizzer http://sailingcatamarans.com/index.php/designs-2/2-catamarans-under-25ft/160-sango Well worth a look. Sango is a longer version of Wizard. Both are really masterpieces and in my opinion the best folding catamarans anywhere. The system is incredibly simple and adds very little complexity or cost to the build. Unfortunately it does rotate the hulls through 90 degrees which means plumbing can be problematic, particularly a marine head. A removable porta potti is easily accommodated. So I want to build a dem
